KEIN.ORG started in summer 1997 at documenta X in the context of "Hybrid Workspace" with the launch of the "no one is illegal" campaign website which was back then hosted by the "contrast.org" server.

Soon we decided to set up our own server and build our own networking infrastructure which we then also offered to various local activist groups as well as migrant self-organizations.

Since 1998 KEIN.ORG has been designed, developed and administrated by alternating teams of autodidacts -- with a lot of help from friends, colleagues or even strangers who teach us the essentials of networking technologies and patiently answered even the most stupid questions.

From 2001 till 2005, KEIN.ORG has served as a laboratory for the development of D-A-S-H, a large scale hosting project on european level. After the end of the funding period for D-A-S-H in summer 2005 KEIN.ORG has resumed the entire service and support program with hosting of the websites of hundreds of antiracist and antifascist activist groups all across europe.

At the same time we have been approached by an increasing number of fine artists, curators, architects, urban researchers, filmmakers, performance artists, choreographers and cultural workers who asked us to introduce them to new media and networking technologies and to collaborate on a series of specific projects.

Due to the concentration and monopolization of the commercial webhosting market and the increasing efforts to run a private server on the internet we are also experiencing a growing need of new media artists and activists for a professional but non-commercial hosting plan. This includes the conservation of historical pieces of net art, as well as the reconstruction of their original software environment.

At KEIN.ORG we have designed and realized a wide range of own projects with a specific focus on open source multimedia distribution and information management and retrieval. The unique, self-funded and self-run environment we set up at KEIN.ORG allows us to develop them as work in progress and to constantly renew and regenerate them more or less independently from external influences such as sudden hypes or funding cuts.

KEIN.ORG has a strong commitment to the open source content management system drupal which we started to install for the first time in early 2003. By now we serve more than 150 installations in several independent farms. Among the most popular sites are DICTIONARY OF WAR, MAKEWORLDS, the multi-user blog ROUNDTABLE of the Research Architecture Institute at Goldsmiths College, the peer-to-peer video syndication network V2V, the internet platform D-A-S-H, and most lately the NETTIME-L mailinglist.

After ten years of existence, KEIN.ORG runs eleven servers situated at various locations in Europe and beyond. KEIN.ORG is currently hosting more than 500 websites, about 200 content management systems and countless mailinglists from 5 to 5000 subscribers, as well as numerous email-accounts.
